How much does an SR-22 raise your insurance?

The filing costs very little. The violation behind it is the expensive part — and companies disagree wildly about how expensive.

SR-22 · Updated September 2026

The filing fee is not the expense

The SR-22 filing itself carries a small fee, typically a one-time charge in the range of a few tens of dollars depending on the carrier. That part is trivial.

The cost comes from what caused the requirement. A DUI, driving uninsured, or an accumulation of violations moves you into a higher-risk tier, and that is what changes the premium — often substantially, and for years rather than months.

Why two quotes can be so far apart

Every carrier prices violations according to its own claims experience, and they do not agree. One company may treat a single DUI as near-uninsurable; another writes it routinely at a price that is merely high. Some will not make SR-22 filings at all.

That spread is the whole argument for comparing after a violation. Shopping a clean record might save a modest amount. Shopping a record with a DUI on it regularly produces much larger differences, because you are not just finding a better rate — you are finding the carriers that want the risk.

What brings it down over time

Continuous coverage with no further violations is the main one. Violations age off on carrier-specific schedules, so the cheapest company at the beginning of the period is frequently not the cheapest one two years in.

Ask us to re-shop at every renewal rather than waiting until the filing ends. A defensive driving course earns credit with some carriers, and paying in full avoids installment fees.

If you do not own a vehicle, a non-owner policy satisfies the filing at a lower cost than a standard policy.

Common questions

How much does an SR-22 increase car insurance?

The filing fee is small. The increase comes from the violation behind it, and it varies enormously by carrier — which is why comparing companies matters more after a violation than before one.

Is there a cheap SR-22 insurance option?

The cheapest route is usually finding the carrier that treats your particular record most favorably, and a non-owner policy if you do not own a vehicle. There is no way to file an SR-22 without an underlying policy.

How long will my rate stay high?

Usually several years, with violations ageing off on carrier-specific schedules. Re-shop at each renewal rather than waiting for the filing to end.

Do all insurance companies file SR-22s?

No. Some decline the filing entirely, which narrows your options. We work with carriers that do file.
