Auto insurance in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma

Liability, collision, comprehensive and uninsured motorist coverage, shopped across carriers, from an office you can walk into.

Coverage on a personal auto policy

Liability. Pays for injuries and property damage you cause to others. Every state sets a minimum, and the minimum is usually well below what a serious accident costs.

Collision. Repairs your own vehicle after an accident, whoever is at fault.

Comprehensive. Covers damage that is not a collision: hail, theft, fire, flood, a deer, a rock through the windshield.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist. Steps in when the driver who hit you has no coverage or not enough of it.

Medical payments. Covers medical bills for you and your passengers regardless of fault.

State minimums differ

Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma each set their own requirements. The minimum liability limits are currently 25/50/25 in all three, but the other required coverages differ — particularly in Kansas.

Missouri requires at least $25,000 bodily injury liability per person, $50,000 per accident, $25,000 property damage liability per accident, and $25,000/$50,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage.

Kansas requires the same 25/50/25 liability, plus $25,000/$50,000 uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage, plus personal injury protection with required minimum benefits for medical expenses, lost income, rehabilitation, funeral expenses and certain replacement services. Kansas is a no-fault state, so PIP can pay certain injury-related expenses for you and your passengers regardless of who caused the accident.

Oklahoma requires at least $25,000 bodily injury liability per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage liability per accident. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is available and can be rejected in writing.

What does 25/50/25 actually mean?

If you cause an accident, a 25/50/25 liability policy provides up to $25,000 for bodily injury to one person, $50,000 total for everyone injured in that accident, and $25,000 for damage to other people's property.

Those are maximum policy limits, not a guarantee they will be enough.

Minimum coverage versus enough coverage

State minimum insurance makes you legal to drive. Legal and adequately protected are not the same thing.

Take the $25,000 property damage limit. A serious accident involving a newer SUV, a pickup, a luxury vehicle or several vehicles can pass $25,000 surprisingly fast. Serious injuries pass a $25,000 bodily injury limit faster still, and anything above your limit comes out of your own pocket.

For customers who can afford the additional premium, we generally recommend quoting higher liability limits rather than defaulting to the state minimum. For many households 100/300/100 is a useful starting point to compare against minimum coverage, and customers with significant assets or higher exposure should look at higher limits and an umbrella policy.

The important thing is to see the price difference. Substantially better liability protection often costs less than people expect.

Moving or driving across state lines?

If you move, buy a vehicle across the state line, or regularly use a vehicle for work in another state, tell us. The policy should reflect where the vehicle is principally garaged, who drives it and how it is used.

We will make sure it is written for the right state and explain the options available to you there.

Common questions

Can I get proof of insurance the same day?

Yes. Walk into any of our offices and we can usually get you covered and hand you ID cards during the same visit. If you would rather not come in, we can do the whole thing by phone, take payment by card or ACH, send documents through DocuSign, and email your ID cards and proof of insurance to you.

What do I need to bring for a quote?

Generally a driver's license for each driver, the VIN for each vehicle, and your current policy declarations page if you have one. Having the current page lets us compare like for like instead of guessing at your limits.

My coverage lapsed. Can you still write a policy?

Yes. Getting drivers covered after a lapse is something we handle regularly, and being independent means we can look for the carrier that will take it rather than being stuck with one company's rules.

Do you cover drivers in Kansas and Oklahoma?

Yes. We are licensed in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma and can write a policy for the state where your vehicle is garaged.
