SR-22 after a DUI or DWI

The filing is part of getting your license back. Here is the sequence, and what insurance looks like afterwards.

SR-22 · Updated September 2026

Why a DUI usually triggers a filing

States require proof of financial responsibility from drivers they consider higher risk, and a DUI or DWI conviction is one of the clearest triggers. The SR-22 is that proof: a certificate your insurer files confirming you carry at least the required liability coverage.

It is normally part of getting a suspended license reinstated, alongside court requirements and fees. The order you receive will say what is required and for how long.

What to expect from insurance afterwards

Expect a significant increase, expect it to last several years, and expect carriers to disagree about how much. Some will decline the risk outright. Others write it routinely.

Being an independent agency is what matters at this point. We can take one application to the carriers that work with these records rather than you calling companies one at a time and collecting declines.

The sequence, in practice

Find out exactly what your order requires. Get a policy in force with a carrier that will make the filing. We submit the SR-22 electronically, usually the same day, and the state takes up to five days to process it. The suspension lifts once the state's requirements, including any fees, are satisfied.

If you do not own a vehicle, a non-owner policy satisfies the requirement and costs less.

Keeping it from getting worse

Do not let the policy lapse. A lapse while the filing is required generally restarts the clock and brings another suspension — which turns a bad few years into a worse few years.

Automatic payments, or paying in full, is the simplest protection there is.

Common questions

Do I need an SR-22 after a DUI in Missouri?

In most cases yes, as part of reinstating the license. Your order will say what is required and for how long; we can file it once a policy is in force.

Can I get insurance at all after a DUI?

Yes. Some carriers decline the risk, but others write it regularly. The pricing differs enormously between them, which is why shopping matters more now than at any other point.

How fast can you file it?

We file electronically, usually the same day the policy is in force. The Department of Revenue then takes up to five days to process it and update your record.

What if I do not own a car?

A non-owner policy provides the liability coverage the state requires and satisfies the filing, usually at a lower premium than a standard policy.
